There are three types of politicians vying for elective positions in 2023. The first is the arrogant politician who is drunk with power and believes in his pocket to manipulate election and remain in power.
For this politician, nothing else matters as long as they retain power. They pride themselves as saviours, whereas they are savages, ferociously feasting on the corporate wealth of their constituencies.
Every four years, this politician, bloated from greed, purchases an Expression of Interest form with which he strives for a new tenure.
Then the second class are those who are in politics because they want to prove that they can. They have once tasted power and due to intoxication, cannot relinquish it because they too are drunk. To them, their self-esteem and the ability to say, “I told you I could do it,” matters more than the collective will of the people.
Then there is the young, vibrant and selfless leader who is pained by the rate of decadence and rot experienced in his state. He rarely sleeps at night because the place he is supposed to call “home” has fallen standards of living and hazy images of structures almost extinct.
As he walks the street of his constituency, he groans at the poverty lines on the faces of his people, the market woman heavily taxed without results, the abandoned projects and the roads which have been destroyed in the pretence of rehabilitation.
He asks, “How can this be? How can the commercial strength of Aba become a subject of mockery? How can my state be so blessed and yet so impoverished?” Then he gathers his strength, recruits a team because he understands the power of team work and then with their collective support, he purchases a form and joins the race.
To this leader, winning is not a personal ambition. It is not an attempt to hold onto power and definitely not an act of showmanship. When he wins, the people would have won. When he wins, jubilation will resound. It will be a jamboree because the will and desire of the people would have prevailed.
