When Transaero, a large Russian airline with big plans, went bankrupt in 2015, it left behind many aircraft orders which went fulfilled but unpaid and never delivered.
Two of these aircraft were 747-8s which were built but never left the hands of Boeing when Transaero could not pay for them. These planes have been sitting with Boeing for awhile now and have caught the eye of the US Air Force which may buy and convert them to accommodate POTUS instead of building new aircraft from scratch at a higher price.
The deal is currently being finalized.
The initial price tag for the jets will be much lower but the cost of converting two civilian 747-8 aircraft into ones capable of transporting the President of the United States securely and comfortably will determine the final price tag.
But, these aircraft are ready for modification and could be delivered very soon, possibly even under the Trump administration. It seems he has succeeded in lowering the cost of the Air Force One program.
