Apple Continues iPod Extinction

Apple has discretely killed off the iPod Nano and the iPod Shuffle leaving the iPod Touch as the final survivor off all its siblings.
The iPod Touch is now available in a 32GB option and a 128GB option. The 32GB option starts at $199 and the 128GB option has been recently updated.
Many consumers, but not enough to alleviate a decline in sales, have enjoyed the durability and simplicity of these products. The fact that these devices were not internet enabled was actually a big selling point. These devices were for music and music only, a great thing for an easily distracted runner. But all good things must come to an end to make way for newer technology.
iPod sales peaked in 2008 with $9.2 billion in revenue but as the iPhone has grown in popularity, sales of the iPod have plunged off the charts… literally. Apple no longer lists its iPod lineup on its financial statements independently with specifics. Instead, the iPod lineup has found its way to the “Other” section.
These killings follow the death of the iPod Classic in 2014.
However, Apple has chosen to keep the “Pod” name with its new HomePod (a home speaker) and its wireless earbuds, the Air Pods.
The age of the independent portable music player is over with smartphones taking over this market segment. The one remaining iPod model, the iPod Touch, is nothing more than an iPhone lite with few similarities to its fellow iPods.
