says flooding is avoidable

The Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress, Prophet Jones Ode Erue, has berated the Delta State Governor, Sen. Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa over the perennial floods in Asaba and Ughelli, and other parts of the state.

Erue, in a statement through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Billy Egbe, had while expressing his extreme displeasure, condemned as ‘shameful and embarrassing’, the lackadaisical response of the Okowa-led administration to the yearly misfortune and hardship faced by Deltans in Asaba and Ughelli, and other areas as a result of the perennial flooding in the State.

He indicated that the problem of flooding in Asaba and Ughelli were not insurmountable, but that the State Government does not have the commitment and passion to care enough about the catastrophic consequences of these yearly events on ordinary citizens of the state. He pointedly advised Hon. Festus Ovie-Agas, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) who hails from Ughelli North LGA, to use his privileged position of influence to attract some meaningful development to the area, noting that he may have been overwhelmed by a sinister agenda that has strangulated his office to the detriment of his own people.

According to him, “Flooding in Asaba and Ughelli are avoidable; and it is most unfortunate that non-chalant elements who got into power through the back door continue to hijack the financial resources of the State to satisfy their thirst for worldly pleasure to the detriment of Deltans whose interest they swore to protect.” He further stated that “Instead of exhibiting remorse for their poor performance, they have chosen to steal and abscond with our common patrimony to countries that they can run to after they would have lost the forth-coming 2019 election.” Prophet Jones Erue expressed optimism that APC Delta will not relent in its effort to rescue Delta State from the venomous pangs of the PDP that continues to inject poison into the nerves and fibres of the state, thereby stalling its overall development.

Erue further emphasized that the disgraceful situation in both Asaba and Ughelli is a direct consequence of Governor Okowa’s lack of leadership qualities to steer the state to greater heights.

“Before now, individuals take it upon themselves to clear the swamps in Ughelli to pave way for water to flow into the rivers, but the state government needs to step up and take the responsibility for a more permanent solution. We wonder what happens to the ecological funds that come into the state annually from the Federal Government to assist in tackling environmental challenges. He said, “While I was resident in Ughelli, I used to engage a swamp buggy to clear some blocked water channels to enable the water flow through to the surrounding creeks and rivers; but the government ought to plan a systemic long-term solution that can tackle the problem squarely, and then set up a clearing mechanism that will ensure that flooding is not a recurring yearly event in these areas. It is that kind of determined action that can eliminate its negative impact on the people”, he added.
